Bail Jumper pleads not guilty
A federal fugitive deported from Cuba last week has pleaded not guilty to bail-jumping charges; a magistrate judge refused him bond.
Joseph Adjmi, the federal fugitive expelled from Cuba last week — part of a notorious family of Miami bric-a-brac merchants known as the ”Crying Adjmis” — pleaded not guilty Tuesday to bond-jumping charges and was refused bond awaiting trial.
Adjmi looked so feeble that U.S. Magistrate Judge William Turnoff ordered a bailiff to provide the 70-year-old man with a chair so he could sit down during the hearing. Defendants usually stand before the judge.
”He will remain detained,” Turnoff ordered.
At his first court appearance last Thursday, Adjmi did not look ill though he told the judge he was not well and argued about who could represent him. On Tuesday, Adjmi was subdued.
Havana returned Adjmi to Miami a week ago today. On arrival Adjmi was arrested by U.S. marshals on bail-jumping charges going back to 1965 when Adjmi and his father Leon disappeared after being convicted on mail fraud charges in Tampa.
The case began in Miami but was moved because of pre-trial publicity. Leon and his two sons — Joseph and Charles — were convicted, but Charles’ conviction was overturned on appeal. Leon and Joseph each were sentenced to 10 years, but disappeared before surrendering to serve their sentences.
The family of linen-store merchants was known as the ”Crying Adjmis” because of pressure tactics — including weeping — they used on customers to sell fake art and pocket insurance money. They claimed they needed money to avoid bankruptcy.
The pair, rumored to have fled to Hong Kong or Beirut, was not heard from again.
An attorney in Israel, Mordechai Tzivin, told The Miami Herald last week that Adjmi had spent most of his time in Europe and arrived in Cuba two years ago. He said Cuban authorities arrested Adjmi for allegedly carrying a false Israeli passport and almost $100,000. He was held in Cuban prisons for a year and a half, Tzivin said.
