Priest Arrested in Mexico for punching Cop.

A Mexican priest briefly ended up behind bars after punching a policemen who caught him driving drunkenly through the streets of the northern city of Monterrey.

Priest Manuel Raul Ortega, who was not wearing clerical dress but was clutching a prayer book when captured, launched himself at the traffic cop who pulled him over earlier this week.

“The individual became very violent because they were going to tow away his car. He attacked a policeman and was taken away,” said transit department spokesman Hector Lozano on Thursday.

Ortega’s papers identified him as a priest. He was released a few hours after his arrest after paying the fines for his offenses.

Monterrey and Mexico City are in the midst of a tough new drive to clamp down on widespread drunken driving after tequila and beer-fueled lunches and parties.

JetBlue Employees, Agents ripped off passangers

Four JetBlue employees and a New York City corrections officer were arrested on Tuesday on charges of splurging with credit cards forgotten by passengers rushing to catch their flights, prosecutors said. The arrests come as the low-cost airline struggles to rebuild customer confidence after a February storm triggered the cancellation of some 1,200 JetBlue flights and left passengers stranded or fuming on grounded planes for hours.

A probe by Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau found that the five, who included three customer service agents and a flight attendant, went on shopping sprees using credit and debit cards that belonged to JetBlue customers.

The cards, one of which the employees gave to the corrections officer, were used to make purchases at liquor stores, restaurants and shops, including Bloomingdale’s and Victoria’s Secret.

JetBlue spokesman Bryan Baldwin said the company is cooperating fully with the investigation and that the four employees have been suspended.

Investigators were tipped off to the scheme on June 7, 2006, after a law student who was flying from New York to Boston forgot his credit card at the JetBlue terminal at John F. Kennedy Airport. The card was later used to rack up charges of more than $500.

Airports can often be stressful places,” Morgenthau said. “These defendants took advantage of that stress when customers, focused on their travel plans, inadvertently left their credit cards with JetBlue employees, ironically working as ‘customer service’ agents. Instead of providing assistance, these agents ripped off passengers.

28 Arrested in Florida Online Sex Sting

Law enforcement officials in Polk County Fla., arrested 28 men for soliciting sex with minors after setting up a weeklong sting operation in a suburban home where undercover officers communicated with the alleged predators over the Internet. Three of the 28 people who were arrested told authorities they worked for the Walt Disney Company, which owns and operates several theme parks in the Orlando area including Walt Disney World. Among the other arrested suspects were a volunteer for the Orlando Boys and Girls Club and a student at the University of Florida.

Those arrested ranged in age from 17 to 55. Each arrived at the suburban house apparently believing they were going to meet with an underage girl.

Instead, they were met by a house full of armed detectives working a sting led by the Orlando County Sheriff’s Department, which conducted its second operation in less than a year to target internet crimes against children.

The operation was concluded and the arrests announced late Sunday. The 28 people were booked into the Polk County Jail on a variety of sex-related charges.

“These deviants came to the undercover location to have sex with a child,” the Polk County sheriff, Grady Judd, said in a statement. “We stopped them.” “I don’t know any other way to say this,” he added. “We will not tolerate anyone preying on our children. We will not allow these criminals’ behavior to escalate to kidnapping or murder.”

The sheriff’s office said that, according to national statistics, 1 in 7 children say that they have received an online solicitation; 1 in 11 has received an aggressive online sexual solicitation; and 1 in 3 has been exposed to unwanted sexual images on line.

The elaborate sting operation involved about 50 officers from a variety of local, state and federal law-enforcement agencies, including the Rocky Mount Police Department in North Carolina and the Florida attorney general’s office.

In a week’s time, the detectives communicated with about 250 people from as far away as California and England.

A spokeswoman for Disney told The Associated Press that it is the company’s policy to take accusations of sexual misconduct by its employees seriously, and that if the accusations prove to be true, the company will take “appropriate action.”

The sheriff’s department allowed reporters and photographers from several news agencies to witness the sting operation, conducted at a house on a cul-de-sac that was staffed around the clock for a week.

A reporter for The Orlando Sentinel who was at the house described the officers’ operation as “fairly simple: Create a fake profile of a girl or boy, enter an Internet chat room and wait for a message.”

Some of those who contacted the fictitious girls and boys wanted to chat for a couple of days, the Sentinel said, while others got “straight to the point,” arranging to meet them for sex.

Those people were directed to the Orlando home.

A videotape of the scene, posted on the Sentinel’s web site, shows Jonathan K. Thompkins, a 19-year-old food preparation worker from nearby Melbourne, Fla., being arrested after he appeared at the house, apparently expecting to go skinny dipping with a 13-year-old girl.

When he was met by investigators at the front door instead, Mr. Thompkins is heard on the tape saying “I knew it.”

Mr. Thompkins told reporters that he went to the home with plans to meet with the girl and “just to go into the pool, and whatever happens, happens.”

“I don’t know what I was thinking,” he told them. “My mom raised me better.”

A spokeswoman for the sheriff’s department, Donna C. Wood, said it may conduct another such sting.

“He is making this a national call to arms,” Ms. Wood said of Sheriff Grady. “Knowing him, he will do another one sometime, but hopefully he’ll give our officers a break before then.”

La Russa arrested on drunk driving charge

JUPITER, Fla., St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was arrested Thursday on a drunken driving charge after police said they found him asleep inside his running sport utility vehicle at a stop light.

La Russa gave two breath samples and had a blood alcohol content of 0.093 percent, Jupiter police said in a statement. Florida’s legal driving limit is 0.08 percent.

Undercover officers saw La Russa’s SUV sitting partially in an intersection around midnight and not moving despite two green lights, police said. Officers knocked on the window and La Russa did not initially respond.

The SUV was in drive and running, with La Russa’s foot on the brake, police said. When he woke up, the officers asked him to get out of the SUV. La Russa was cooperative during his arrest, police said.

The 62-year-old La Russa was booked into the Palm Beach County jail on the misdemeanor count about four hours later, according to police and jail records. He was released about 8:30 a.m. after posting $500 cash bond, said Paul Miller, a Palm Beach County sheriff’s office spokesman.

La Russa declined to comment while he was outside the clubhouse in uniform hours later at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, where he planned to manage a spring training game against the Florida Marlins.

The Cardinals said in a statement that the team takes “these matters very seriously” and apologized for any embarrassment and distractions. “The Cardinals organization remains supportive of Tony,” the team said.

La Russa is a four-time manager of the year and led the Cardinals to the World Series championship last season. He also won the title in 1989 with the Oakland Athletics and has won three other pennants. His 2,297 wins over 28 seasons with the Chicago White Sox, A’s and Cardinals is third on the career list.

Bank Robber Arrested

A man suspected in six bank robberies in Palm Beach County and one in Broward County was arrested about 4 p.m. Tuesday in Miami-Dade County, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.

PBSO issued five arrest warrants for Karl Barthol, 38, of Pompano Beach, who is also a suspect in a one robbery in Delray Beach, PBSO spokesman Paul Miller said. The robberies in PBSO’s jurisdiction Barthol is suspected in span throughout the county since November 2006, Miller said.

“He was a prolific robber so were glad to get him off the streets,” Miller said.

No one was injured in the robberies.

Barthol would allegedly present a note to the teller saying he had a bomb in a briefcase and demand money, Miller said. He would then escape in a Ford F-150 truck.

Miami fugitive detectives arrested Barthol, who is being held in Broward County Jail, where PBSO detectives interviewed him.

The robberies Barthol are suspected in include:

Nov. 8, 2006: Bank of America 6568 West Atlantic Ave., west of Delray Beach.

Dec. 27: Bank of America, 6360 Lantana Road, west of Lantana.

Feb. 5: Washington Mutual Bank, 22191 Powerline Road, west of Boca Raton.

March 6: Wachovia Bank, 6905 Lake Worth Road, west of Lake Worth.

March 13: Bank of America, 9760 South Military Trail, west of Boynton Beach.

He also allegedly robbed a Bank of America Oct. 31 in Broward County at West Mcnab Road and North University Drive in Tamarac.
